Cambodia is set to welcome another international airport following the recent inauguration of Siem Reap Angkor International Airport in 2023. This year, travelers will be introduced to the new Techo International Airport (TIA) in Phnom Penh, which is designed to accommodate large aircrafts, allowing the facility to welcome more passengers to the country.<\/p>\n

Covering over 2,600 hectares and costing approximately $1.2 billion, TIA will become the ninth-largest airport in the world. This new airport has also been recognized as one of the “11 architecture projects set to reshape the world in 2025” by CNN<\/a>. Notably, it will be powered by solar energy generated from an on-site solar farm.<\/p>\n

The airport’s construction is divided into three phases, featuring a 4-kilometer runway to handle large aircrafts, with plans for an additional two runways to enhance capacity for passenger accommodation. Located 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, TIA is designed by Foster + Partners<\/a>, a UK-based architecture and design studio established in 1967. The firm is known for handling significant projects, including Six Senses Residences <\/a>in Thailand, 270 Park Avenue<\/a> in New York, and Apple The Exchange<\/a> in Malaysia.<\/p>\n

Once operational, the new airport is expected to welcome up to 13 million passengers annually. This increased capacity will enhance the country’s visibility to international visitors, boost the tourism sector, and attract more investors. According to a spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), “TIA will become a key player in boosting the Cambodian aviation sector and attracting more international transport that has not yet been accessible to Cambodia.”<\/p>\n
